Join us for this week’s guest speaker - writer Tom Atwell, aka the Maine Gardener

Spring has arrived in Maine and the days continue to warm and for many of us, our thoughts turn to gardening, both flower and vegetable. In this time of Covid-19, vegetable gardening has become more popular than ever. This week’s guest speaker will be writer Tom Atwell who has been writing the Maine Gardener column for the Maine Sunday Telegram since 2004. His talk will cover various vegetables, shrubs, perennial and annual flowers.
Atwell is a native Mainer, born in Skowhegan, reared in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in journalism. He worked full-time at the Portland Press Herald-Maine Sunday Telegram until retiring in 2011.
Atwell considers his wife, Nancy, the better gardener and by a wide margin the better weeder in the family, although he takes the nod in the pruning category. She trained him carefully from the time they started gardening together, so 30 years later he was competent enough to write a column. He emphasizes that he is not a gardening expert. He is a writer who gardens and knows how to interview gardening experts.
